About The University of Hong Kong Department of Music
The Department of Music at The University of Hong Kong combines research and teaching with an active programme of performance and creative work. Its scholars contribute to international musicological research, while graduates have progressed to postgraduate study at universities including Harvard, Princeton and Oxford.
The undergraduate curriculum encompasses Western and Chinese music, music history, theory, ethnomusicology, performance and composition. Students explore diverse traditions and approaches, from gamelan and qin music to electronic composition, film music and the relationships between music, mind and science.
Performance is central to departmental life. Students engage with internationally recognised artists, and music majors taking performance studies receive funded instrumental tuition with teachers selected for their individual needs. Student composers also have opportunities to hear their works performed by professional musicians.
Through its Concert Series and creative networks across Hong Kong and beyond, the department connects academic enquiry with public musical life.
