LCME unveils new Piano syllabus for 2026

Launching on 13 May 2026, the redesigned syllabus spans Steps through to Grade 8 and is intended to support ‘well-rounded pianistic and musical development’ through a clearer structure and broader choice of repertoire.

Among the headline changes is the introduction of Popular Piano, a new graded repertoire list featuring familiar pieces across a range of genres and styles. In graded exams, candidates will be able to replace up to two set pieces with selections from the Popular Piano list at the same grade, while recital grade candidates may choose any number of pieces from it.

LCME is also introducing new repertoire across all grades, alongside a keyboard harmony test as an alternative to sight reading. The harmony option asks candidates to harmonise a simple melody using the correct chords, with the board describing it as a way of developing ‘useful transferable skills’ and collaborative musicianship.

The syllabus will continue to offer two assessment routes, both available in person and digitally. The graded exam includes three pieces, technical work, sight reading, discussion and aural tests, while the recital grade offers a more performance-focused format built around four pieces plus one additional component.

For the first time, handbook materials will be available in both digital and printed editions, and LCME will also release free digital specimen booklets covering Technical Work, Aural and Sight Reading.

The board has also clarified its pre-grade pathway, with pre-Grade 1 now formed by Steps 1 and 2. The Pre-Preparatory level will be withdrawn from the new syllabus, although it will remain available during the overlap period.

Teachers, candidates and exam centres will have more than a year to make the change, with the current 2021 Piano syllabus remaining valid until 31 July 2027.
