Music education and youth music leaders recognised in King’s Birthday Honours
Figures working across music education, youth music, research, higher education and performing arts training have been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours, with awards highlighting the role of music in education, inclusion, social change and cultural life.
Professor Mykaell Riley, director of the Black Music Research Unit and principal investigator for Bass Culture Research at the University of Westminster, has been appointed MBE for services to research and education around Black British music.
Riley, who is also an RSL Fellow, has played a leading role in documenting, researching and promoting the contribution of Black British music to culture, education and the creative industries.
Adam Joolia, chief executive of AudioActive, receives the British Empire Medal for services to young people and music. AudioActive is known for its work with young people, music, youth culture and social change, supporting young people to develop creative skills, confidence and pathways into music.
The list also recognises Paul McCreesh, conductor and founder of Gabrieli, who has been appointed CBE for services to music and music education, and Diana Ambache, musician, broadcaster and writer, who receives an MBE for services to music and education.
There was further recognition for grassroots and performing arts education. Rita Helen Lewis, known as Helen Hopkins, receives the British Empire Medal for services to music and music education, while Simon Temple James has been recognised for services to education and music.
Julie Carter, owner and principal of TipToe Stage School and Scalliwags Pre-School in South Ockendon, Essex, has been appointed MBE for services to early years education and performing arts.
The King’s Birthday Honours recognise achievements and service across public life, including education, culture, community work, charity, public service and the arts.
